English as a Second Language

Jordan Graham

Welcome to English as a Second Language. Do you speak Spanish, Arabic, or Malayalam? Well, some of our students speak these or other languages!

The ESL program is designed to support these students as they learn grade level content in their second language - English. ESL students not only have to navigate the academic language of each content area, but they also have to learn how to socialize with teachers and classmates in English. Students work toward proficiency in English through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Once identified, students are given a language proficiency test every Spring. Using the results of this test, the ESL teacher and classroom teachers collaborate to modify instruction and assignments in order for students to be successful in the classroom and on the Standards of Learning tests.

Every child's native language and culture are part of his or her identity. This is something to be valued and celebrated. ESL is a place where students can feel safe to share their cultures while learning about ours.
